The Outdoor Economy and it’s new bread of tech savvy Outdoor Entrepreneur; here come the Millennials
It goes without saying the Outdoor Economy is quickly following in the footsteps of the start-up tech economy. No doubt the Outdoor Entrepreneur had better pay close attention to the Millennials. Marc Cuban is not the only one who believes the next wave of entertainment is experiential. I believe whole hardily. A critical key to our success the outdoor entrepreneur will be the ability to both understand how the Millennial Generation consumes content, and they view outdoor recreation. If you think they are ALL sitting around playing video games. Take a closer look.
The millennial has already discovered the value of experience. You see this new generational grouping wants to participate wholeheartedly in the #dayoffathon. They will workout from 6AM-8AM, paddle their kayak down the river and then go fly fishing for a few hours. But that is not all. They will cap it off with night skiing trip to make sure the day off was a full one.
Why Should The Outdoor Entrepreneur Care?
Does the number 85,000,000 raise an eyebrow? I am not talking dollars. I am talking prospects. That’s right. The largest segment of discretionary purchasers is heading full speed ahead into the number one seed. But that’s not the only reason the outdoor entrepreneur should be interested. Getting outside and moving around dramatically improves physical and mental health. Not to mention general overall well being. Moreover, the hunting and fishing communities all around me set the standard when it comes to family quality time. Outdoor recreational and adventure based activities tend to be challenging, rewarding, and create a lifetime of memories. We don’t embark on these activities because they are easy. And neither do the Millennials. We crave the experience, the challenge, and the memories.
How to Reach These Elusive Little Critters
For starters you are going to have to be transparent and authentic. You’ve been warned. You are going to be staring the most sensitive Bullshit meters you have ever seen right in the face. You are going to have to learn Instagram, SnapChat, and Podcasting. Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit. The social media medium is a must. You are going to have to either outsource this to someone skilled that can represent you out there, or jump in the social media river hip deep. Facebook is not enough. Not enough for a myriad of reasons. This would take me volumes to explain. If I had to choose. Instagram, Snap Chat, and podcasting. Two of these 3 channels are easiest to pick up. More importantly the easiest to gain an immediate connection to the audience. SnapCHat I still struggle with but ask any 9 year old they will give you a quick tutorial.
I mean take a look at what Brian Call and The Gritty Bowman have been able to accomplish. All in less than a years’ time. It is remarkable. They have grown from a group of guys getting together sharing stories with about their bow hunts. To a dominate force of content delivery in Bow Hunting. The majority of their listeners? You guessed it. The millennials. The Gritty Bowman provide hilarious banter coupled with amazing photography and film. In addition they are giving back to the listener. Their interacting with the millennials while conveying a message of conservation, hard work, health, and fitness. A formidable combination.
The team over at Outdoors International have been blowing up Instagram and Facebook for a long time now. Their intellectual referential humor and breathtaking photography on the Gothunts.com Instagram page sets the standard in my eyes. The OI team has been a juggernaut of “go-to” content for years now. With their children getting older, there is only going to be more great content to come.
Hey the way I see it. When my Rec & Tech Podcast launched I was thinking I was younger than I am. Of course I when I grow up. I hope to be just like those pioneers who laid the groundwork.
