What if Ketosis or The Ketogenic Diet
This is a nutrition protocol and/or lifestyle that completely transforms the way your body gathers and puts to work its energy source. By virtue of the “Low Fat” craze over the past few decades it seems counter intuitive. Take it from me. It Works.

The Outdoor Entrepreneur Needs Mental Clarity
In my quest to transfer from high tech founder to outdoor entrepreneur, I have used this Goto #Keto manifesto for the last decade. I have used it to design protocols to reach certain goals including my “Benjamin Button” stage. This was when my doctor said each time I came in I was getting miraculously younger.
Ive tried The Cyclical Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting, but this is the first time I have gone the distance to the Advanced Ketogenic Diet (a much stricter version of The Atkins Diet). A few years ago I was borderline type 2 diabetic and I was as hypertensive as Krispen Glover on the Letterman show. I had to do something drastic. I was in an activity trap that conssted of too much working and not enough concentrating on my nutrition. I mean really as far as my diet was concerned was I paying attention at all. Enter #keto.
Today. My blood Glucose is 76. Resting Heart Rate 68, and I’m down 44 lbs since I started in Nov, 2015. If you concentrate on a Fat First approach its pretty simple. It’s simple, it’s not easy.

So this is super short overview
Ketosis in a nutshell
The body has two succinct forms of energy for the body and brain. They are Glucose or Ketones.
Glucose is your energy source in a high carb or high protein diet. Ketones are produced as your energy source in an environment of either a high fat or fasted (starvation) state. There are many differences but one to note in a glucose burning state. When you run out of blood glucose and glycogen your body converts muscle to glucose for energy. To the contra-positve when in ketosis, your body becomes fat adapted and converts fat to energy. Yes you burn fat when you eat fat. Sounds to me like fat got a raw deal. As Kenton Clairmont, trainer and founder of Train to Hunt Challenge out it on a Gritty Bowman Podcast, “Fat shouldn’t have been named after an undesirable body type. Fat should have been named awesome.”
In a calorie restricted state while in Ketosis, one can burn significant fat for weight loss. Lastly the ability for the Ketones easily cross the blood brain barrier stimulates incredible cognitive benefits. Ketones other benefits include naturally suppress appetite, delay oxygen toxicity, been shown to be effective against cancer cell growth to name a few.
If you take a hard look at the science it is tough to refute as “the better metabolic way”. Oh as far as I can tell you are either in ketosis or in glucosis one or the other. That’s the short version.
A little more cause I can’t help myself. Just a little I promise.
The most common way the body creates energy for the body and the mind is it takes food in the form of three Macro Nutrient Categories (Macros):
- Carbohydrates = 4 Calories (kCal) per Gram
- Protein = 4 Calories (kCal) per Gram
- Fat = 9 Calories (kCal) per Gram
Food delivered in the form of these 3 MACROS are then converted into glucose (sugar by any other name). In a balanced diet or random delivery of these macros this is normally the how things work.
With KETO, you meticulously deliver the MACROS with a strategy of FAT first and foremost and other macros support this approach with their Micro nutrients (Categories too many to mention here). Number 2 Macro in order of quantity and significance Protein, and number 3 in quantity and significance Carbohydrates. In my opinion Carbs with no fiber deliver little nutritional significance but can deliver above and beyond psychological and social comfort and need.
Macros – Focus on the Fat
So the divisions of foods you eat in Calories (being careful to remember that Fat in Grams consist of more that twice the calories), will look like this:
- Fat = 70%
- Protein = 25%
- Carbohydrates = 5%
When you consistently eat this way your body enters a state of nutritional Ketosis.
This is a state when you body no longer has enough Carbohydrate Macro and so the body then creates a “new” form of energy for the body which is called a Ketone body. What is so magnificent about this Ketone is that instead of burning muscle like you would on a carbohydrate restricted low-fat diet, your body actually burns Fat.
There are several other benefits of the Ketone body such as Epilepsy treatment, enhanced mental capacity, cancer treatment, lowered risk of diabetes and heart disease, Alzheimer’s studies are showing positive results, and there has been some progress with autism patients as well.
Some other benefits I have noticed is that I feel satiated, I do not have ANY cravings, I am closer to my physiology -“In Tune”, I need way less sleep. These observations are in no way scientific, but rest assure I will make them scientific in the near future.
The manifold benefit of KETO is that if you are putting your muscles under stress in the form of physical workouts, you can actually gain muscle while loosing fat.
I am currently in the process of building muscle while loosing fat and I will post my findings in the Late Spring 2016.
